The discussion surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in San Luis Potosí has taken a turn that extends beyond the local level. Instead of focusing the debate solely on state legislation, the State Government has proposed that large digital platforms, such as Meta, must also assume responsibility for the circulation of false information that affects citizens, journalists, and media professionals.
During the First State Meeting on Human Rights and Artificial Intelligence, Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona maintained that the challenge lies not only in regulating the use of AI, but also in ensuring that social media companies participate in combating disinformation and the misuse of these technologies.
“It’s not about confusing one thing with another. AI regulation is used across the board,” the governor stated, noting that this technology is already part of daily life, from information searches to sensitive issues such as health, where it can even influence practices like self-medication or the dissemination of biased content.
Gallardo explained that the proposal being promoted by San Luis Potosí seeks to contribute to the national discussion on the regulation of artificial intelligence, considering that its effects extend to areas as diverse as communication, medicine, and even security.
The governor insisted that the spread of fake news transcends political differences and represents a social problem that must be addressed jointly by authorities and technology companies.
“Fake news is not a political issue; it’s about regulating something that affects people. These kinds of things must be addressed in AI and on platforms. One of you mentioned having this bill presented with Meta so that it can be taken into account and regulated,” he stated.
With this, the state executive called on companies like Meta to review the operation of their algorithms and content moderation mechanisms, with the goal of prioritizing user protection over commercial interests and reducing the impact of disinformation on social media.
