A man was arrested in the Huasteca region of the state of San Luis Potosí while installing video surveillance cameras without authorization in various locations within the municipality.

According to the State Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the devices installed by the individual were used by a criminal group operating in the area.

The arrest took place on Federal Highway 70 Valles-Tampico, where the individual was intercepted while driving a cloned vehicle with characteristics similar to those used by a well-known telephone company.

Details of the arrest

Video surveillance equipment and vehicle

The detainee, identified as Luis, was driving a 2016 Nissan March, white and blue, with lettering similar to that of the telephone company Telmex. He was also wearing a fake uniform from the same company, allowing him to go unnoticed while carrying out the illegal installations.

During the operation, authorities seized various devices, including a video surveillance camera, a camera with the telephone company’s logo, a power cable, and ten metal devices known as tire-punching devices.

According to a statement issued by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the detainee and the confiscated equipment were handed over to the State Attorney General’s Office for further investigation. Authorities are seeking to determine the scope of the criminal activities related to the installed cameras and their connection to the criminal group operating in the region.

Illegal cameras installed in Huasteca

In a parallel operation carried out in the municipality of Valles, members of the SEDENA (National Security Agency) and the State Civil Guard dismantled several video surveillance cameras and modems that had been placed at strategic points in the city, such as the Mexico-Laredo boulevard.

According to authorities, this equipment was also linked to organized crime activities. These types of devices are used by criminal groups to monitor the movements of security forces and ensure control of their operations in the area.

The Huasteca region has been the scene of various preventive and protective actions by state and federal authorities seeking to combat the presence of criminal groups.

The installation of unauthorized video surveillance cameras is a common practice used by these organizations to obtain strategic information and maintain control over their illicit activities. Authorities have intensified operations in the area to dismantle these clandestine surveillance networks and ensure the safety of residents.
