A decrease in the number of vehicles exported and produced in Mexico was reported in May of this year, the impact of which was also seen in automakers with a presence in San Luis Potosí; this according to data from the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
In terms of exports, a total of 310,051 vehicles were exported in May 2024, while in the same month in 2025, 301,112 automobiles were exported, representing a decrease of 2.88% of exports.
Meanwhile, the cumulative number of vehicles exported between January and March 2024 was 1,424,088, while in the same period in 2025, 1,334,667 automobiles were exported, a 6.27% decrease in total exports during these first five months of the year.
It is worth noting that San Luis Potosí is home to General Motors and BMW assembly plants, the latter being the only assembly plant in Mexico belonging to the German company.
In the case of General Motors, a total of 85,753 vehicles of this brand were exported by May 2024, compared to 69,987 exports in May of this year, representing a decrease of 18.38%. Meanwhile, from January to May 2024, 354,792 vehicles of this brand were exported, compared to 332,798 vehicles in the same period in 2025, representing a 6.19% decrease in exports.
There was also a decrease in the number of BMW automobile exports, with 9,389 vehicles exported in May 2024 and 8,813 in the same month in 2025, representing a 6.13% decrease. Meanwhile, between January and May 2024, a cumulative total of 40,305 vehicles were exported, compared to 33,636 between January and May 2025; that is, a 16.54% decrease in the total exports.
Nationally, a decline in light vehicle production was also recorded. Production of 365,644 vehicles was reported in May 2024, down from 358,209 in the same month in 2025, representing a 2.03% drop.
The outlook is slightly more encouraging regarding the cumulative figures between January and May. A total of 1,653,141 vehicles were reported produced in 2024, compared to 1,645,673 vehicles produced between January and May 2025, indicating a decrease of just 0.4% in car production.
BMW reported a decrease in the number of cars produced; while the German automaker reported 9,547 vehicles produced in May 2024, that number fell to 8,883 in the same month in 2025, representing a decrease of 6.95%.
Regarding the cumulative number of vehicles produced by BMW between January and May, 42,623 vehicles were reported produced in 2024, compared to 41,341 in 2025, representing a 3% decrease in vehicle production year-over-year.
The outlook is different for GM, as production of 70,691 vehicles was reported for May 2024, compared to 79,720 in May of this year, representing a 12.77% increase in vehicle production.
Regarding the cumulative figures between January and May, the American company reported a total of 361,203 vehicles produced in this period of 2024, compared to 362,497 vehicles produced in the same period of 2025, representing an increase of 0.35%.
GM Moves Production to the US
General Motors announced in a statement that two models currently assembled in Mexico will be manufactured in the United States.
It detailed that the Chevrolet Blazer will be produced at the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee and the Chevrolet Equinox will be produced at the Fairfax complex in Kansas City; these models are currently assembled at the Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, and San Luis Potosí plants.
In this regard, Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard reported via social media that he had a call with executives from the automotive company in Mexico, and they reported that the plants in the country will continue to operate normally.
