General Motors on the verge of a strike in San Luis Potosí; union sets deadline

Workers at the General Motors plant in Villa de Reyes may go on strike this Thursday due to the company’s refusal to review the 2026 wage increase.

The Carlos Leone union, which holds the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) at the GM plant in Villa de Reyes, announced that they are about to launch a strike this Thursday, April 2, because the company has refused to negotiate this year’s wage increase.

They explained that they submitted their demands to the company two weeks ago, proposing a 17% wage increase. However, the Human Resources and Labor Relations department has not responded to the union’s invitations to review the proposal.

Therefore, by agreement of the workers, the union has issued a strike notice, scheduled to begin this Thursday, April 2, at 6:00 a.m. If an agreement is not reached with the company before that deadline, or if negotiations begin, approximately 7,200 workers at the automaker will suspend operations.

It’s worth noting that just five days ago, the National Independent Union of the Automotive Industry (SINTIIA) finalized contract negotiations at the GM plant in Silao, Guanajuato, securing a 15% increase. This increase comprises 10% as a direct raise to wages and 5% in benefits such as savings funds, vouchers, quarterly bonuses, and Sunday premium pay.

Thus, the two assembly plants located in San Luis Potosí have faced the risk of strikes this year related to wage negotiations, as the National Union holding the collective bargaining agreement at BMW recently initiated similar negotiations. The unions representing workers at both automakers are affiliated with the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM).
