Hibiya Park in Tokyo, Japan, and its visitors witnessed an event that will only occur once in a century, the flowering of a yellow Mexican agave.

Japanese and tourists gathered at the site on Wednesday July 17th, to photograph and take videos of the long plant with yellow flowers that began to show its first petals on July 14.

The pita, the name of the agave, has a height of eight meters and those who regularly pass through Hibiya Park have witnessed its growth, at the same time they are very curious about how it will continue to develop.

It is estimated that this agave is more than 60 years old, according to park workers, there are photos of the plant from 1960, so they consider that it is reaching the end of its life, since the agave blooms only once before dying.

Although for viewers it is not an exotic flower, what makes it special is that it is an ephemeral flower.

The pita, known as American Agave, is a plant native to Mexico, it can be found in regions such as Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí and Nuevo León.

It can measure 2 to 2.5 meters high and 3 to 3.5 meters in diameter, and its stems range from five to eight meters. Its flowers are 7 to 10 centimeters long, green and yellow; with pepals 3.5 cm long.

The pita is also found in other countries such as the South of the United States, and also in Spain (in Alicante, Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Girona).
