Oxxo launches experimental self-checkout format

MONTERREY, NUEVO LEON (January 9, 2021).- Oxxo launched a new format called Oxxo Smart, whose characteristic is to use technology to make it the first self -checkout convenience store.

The convenience store chain that belongs to the Femsa Group said that this new concept is currently at the test level and the objective is to serve a segment such as hospitals, department complexes, or office buildings, among others. “This concept is in the evaluation stage through a test in the city of Monterrey, to analyze its feasibility and performance. 

“At Oxxo we carry out tests and evaluations of innovative concepts, which seek to satisfy the needs of our customers and improve their shopping experience. Through this methodology we have implemented Oxxo Smart, a concept that seeks to offer products and services in customizable formats to serve specific markets in spaces such as department complexes, hospitals or offices ”, the company statement said.

The company mentioned that innovation is a central concept in Oxxo’s culture and values . “We work to be an innovative company that generates new ideas and improvements in products and services, with the aim of strengthening our value proposition every day,” the statement continues.

The document pointed out that Oxxo Smart offers a wide variety of products for this market, has safe and simple self-payment technology, and operates under the strictest health standards. Within its offer it has specialized coffee equipment with a variety of espresso, American, latte and cappuccinos. Femsa did not specify the investment allocated or how many stores under this format it plans to open this year.

The company based in Monterrey, 2 years ago, launched at a test level the Kiosks in shopping malls where it only offers card payment services, deposits, and payment of services such as water, cell phones, landlines, and cable TV. Other supermarket chains such as Walmart de México and HEB have implemented the self-payment concept in some of their stores, which complements the personalized service through their cashiers.
