The United States may start to require all arriving passengers, in addition to those traveling from the United Kingdom, to get tested for coronavirus before entering the country.

The story was first reported by the Reuters news agency.

The potential action comes after the U.S. government started requiring all airline passengers arriving from Britain to test negative for Covid-19 within 72 hours of departure on Monday, several sources told Reuters.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several other U.S. agencies held a phone meeting on Wednesday with U.S. airlines to discuss this possibility.

“Efforts are currently ongoing in the U.S. to assess the risk reduction associated with testing and other recommended preventative measures, determine what a feasible testing regime for air travel may look like, and gain some level of agreement on standards for a harmonized approach to testing for international air travel,” the CDC said in a statement.

The new requirement would include U.S. citizens.

A decision to add new countries to the required testing list could come as soon as next week, with the possibility of the expansion eventually applying to all U.S.-bound passengers.
